I'm getting a Magicshine light from DX and am mindful of reports of the batteries being somewhat on the porus side. What would be the best way to waterproof them, I had thought of self amalgamating tape. Is there a better battery bag available?

Going to replace my High Roller 2.1 (xc version) soon as it feels a bit sketchy on anything wet or rooty. I've read that as I'm on a hardtail I should get a high volume rear tyre as it'll offer a bit more comfort.

I'm running a Minion DHF 60a on the front so ideally it'll be either the same or a little less grippy than that. Also my frame doesn't have amazing tyre clearance - it's an older Trailstar LT and the 2.35 minion just about fits on - much wider and the mud clearance would be awful. The riding I do is a bit of a mixture - xc/singletrack, dirt jumping and increasingly more downhill/freeridey style. High Roller 2.35 seems a standard choice but are they high volume?

Whilst I'm making a tyres thread, I also need some 700x23 tyres suitable for riding on wet roads. My current ones are Specialized somethings which are completely slick and I don't really feel very safe on them at speed in the rain.

Any recommendations on trailerbikes, also has anybody used one of those trailgator towbars which allow you to hitch up their bike to yours when they get tired? What age can you start? Just thinking about this now mini-aracer (age 3.5) is finally riding his own bike without stabilisers.

I also have the option of putting a kiddyback kit on our tandem - it's not been ridden since before he was born, and I have kept threatening mrs aracer that she needs to get on it soon or her seat will be stolen. Is this a beter option, or do I need to wait until later? The big issue is the cost!

<edit> the power of google - I go off to do a search on this and it finds this post already!

Not paying attention and have overtightened a stem bolt whilst installing a new Easton EC70 carbon riser bar! Aaarggghh!. Set up my torque wrench wrong and heard the dreaded crack. Cant see any obvious damage but there are some small indents where the lower stem bolts have pinched. Do I risk riding it or is it destined for some catastrophic failure!

Will there be so many out there. Notice I used the term road riders not roadies.
I don't think so judging by the guys and gals I talk to. A quick nod to getting in Winter miles through ice, snow, rain, fog etc etc soon puts a dampner on their lovely midsummer ride.
I didn't mean to miserable, I was actually trying to point out the benefits of riding all winter. I don't think the image of plowing through dirty slush for months on end was foremost in their minds at Mr Cervelos shop.

For sale, a front Stans Flow rim built onto a DT 240 20mm hub with 32 Silver DT competition spokes and DT red alloy nipples. The wheel runs perfectly true and the bearings are immaculate. There are two small dings in the rim (one is so small it was hardly worth mentioning). I have been running it tubeless with no problems. It is extremely light, and would be at home on many types of bike. I have had it on my 6" bike and more recently on my DH bike. Included in the sale is the Stans tubeless rim strip I have been using. The tyre is not included in the sale...
Picture gallery
The same wheel would be £260 on CRC, RRP is more.

Looking for £130 posted.

A few weeks ago we went to Afan for the first time, and now we're planning another camping/MTB trip for a few days.

Both the Peak & Lake district have been mentioned for possible next trip, is one better than the other? Peak district is closer, but no big deal really. Any advice or trails to aim for?

Living in flat Suffolk we're planning to make the effort every couple of months to get around to some decent riding spots!

No, not a play on words from the Miles Davis album - I need a diversion from a Monday working at home.

Basically - what brands are considered cool or uncool and why?

e.g. I hear talk about Cannondale referred to as soulless - Marin as "old men's bikes" - Orange apparently split opinion? Lapierre as stylish? Trek, cool but ubiquitous? Do "boutique" brands automatically qualify as cool? I also hear of pre-conceived notions about people based on the brands they ride. Where does this stuff come from?

Please feel free to keep your answers as shallow and jovial as you like. This is just supposed to be a bit of harmless fun and not a serious criteria on which to base purchases or any form of sociological conclusion (I'm sure most people, like myself, tend to do their homework and aren't bothered if something's "cool" or not). I've only got involved with bike-related media and forums relatively recently so am kind of new to this area despite being old enough to qualify for a pass to the dodgy-knee club. Just curious what people think.

I'll kick us off -
Can't stand Specialized (don't know why, they just leave me cold)?
I like Whyte's (a bit biased, I ride a 901)
Would love a Yeti (a bit of mythology about them I suppose, but I rode an ASR-5 at a demo in April and swear I heard "Ride of the Valkyries" going off in my head.)

Hi guys,

don't know if anyone has a medical back ground or anything but please read on and any advice would be appreciated.

My partners sister has diabetes, I don't know a thing about it but apparently it's the worst sort.

She's had it years and is now 38 she's had a number of "turns" over the years which from reading about it could be down to her diet or insulin or various factors.

More recently her partner has had to call ambulances on several occasions and as a result her condition was looked into and she saw a specialist who told her the insulin she was using was completely outdated and changed it and had her start a diary to monitor the condition. She doesn't seem to have improved and just today she has been hospitalized after collapsing after her partner left for work only being discovered when he returned. She was in a+e for approx 1 hour and they just sent her home after she had something to eat!!!

Question is, what can we do?

I don't think she is receiving adequate care or supervision, I've looked at the nhs complaints procedure which seems to be for use after things have gone wrong but what I want to do is kick them up the arse and get my sister in-law sorted out.

If you've got this far thanks for reading and any suggestions would be gratefully received

cheers, Bri

Very light use and as such is in near-mint condition, just a bit of very light scuffage to the cage from shifting, but the rest of it looks box-fresh. 34.9, but probably got the shims (somewhere) to reduce to 31.8.

I have to replace a my frame cheaply so I'm looking at an on-one, they seem amazingly cheap for what you get. Looking through reviews and forums, though, there do seem to be occasional comments about poorer quality paintwork and a difficulty in installing headsets - in amongst the abundance of satisfied customers. Is there any truth in this, eg should I makes an allowance for having the headset faced and reamed? That might alter the economics which is an important factor for me, I really need to avoid any unplanned expenditure.

Thanks

simply the most annoying thing ever to be found on a trail. I want to carry more speed into the berm as I'm confident I can turn in. That speed is then literally shaken out of me and my bike as i hit 5 or 6 yards of braking bumps before them and they're the main memory i've taken from whinlatter!!!!

I currently ride a Nicolai Helius CC, it's a fantastic bike don't get me wrong, but there are a couple of downsides.

Rear tyre clearance is a bit limited, especially when running ZTR 355's, the biggest I can get in there is a 2.1" Nobby Nic/Racing Ralph.

It's definatley more biased towards the Cross Country side of things (no surprises there with the name eh )

I'm thinking or replacing the bike or even just the frame.

It's got a good build - XT, Hope Hoops, Thomson & USE finishing kit - so frame only is an option.

It is however nice and light at just over 26lbs and climbs like a demon, it just doesn't seem to descend as well if you know what I mean.

I've thought about getting an off the peg all in one trail bike and really like the look of the new stumpjumpers, any other ideas?

Ideally i reckon a 140mm travel 'trail bike' thats a bit slacker, but not much heavier would be the ideal option.

If I were to go frame only, what would the collective suggest, I've thought of a Cove Hustler, Yeti 575, Turner 5 Spot and a Chumba VF2 or XCL.

Any other ideas? I don't want an Orange 5 BTW as I just can't get on with the looks.

Oh yeah I'd be running my current forks for the foreseeable - 130mm Rev Dual Airs.

Ok, so about halfway through my ride to work today I noticed that I was only able to use 6 through to 9, not a huge problem as I don't have many hills, and I still have the front 3 working.

The shifter was still shifting perfectly in the gears that did work, but it was like the shifter had reached the end of it's range after shifting up from 9 to 6.

I had a look at it when I got home, I assumed there would be a bit of something stuck in the dérailleur, but it looked absolutely fine, I think that something has actually broken inside the shifter.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Thought experiment:

Chain ring teeth wear and go hooky which is why you get chainsuck. I notice they don't all wear evenly and imagine the ones engaging when applying most pedal pressure wear the worst? Is that true?

So if I rotated the rings by 90 degrees before they got too hooky, would that extend their life by 50 percent or more?

Because of the arrangement of ramps and tooth profiles to give the smoothest shifting, should one rotate all three chain rings 90 degrees together?
